Taste is your job

The AI writes competent code and mediocre design. The difference between "clearly AI-made" and "wait, you built that?" is you — the art director.

Here's the quiet truth about every AI build tool: it is a genuinely good engineer and a genuinely average designer. Left alone, it reaches for the same safe, slightly generic look — the one that makes people think "oh, this was made by AI." Your eye is what rescues it. You don't need design training; you need to name what you want and keep asking until it's there.

Feed it your world

The AI has no idea what your brand looks like unless you tell it. So tell it — colors, fonts, and feeling, up front:

Restyle this using my brand. Colors: [2–4 hex codes]. Fonts: [a heading font and a body font]. Feeling: [e.g. "warm, editorial, quiet luxury — calm and uncluttered"]. Use my colors intentionally, not on everything. Keep it tasteful.

Name the feeling — and steal good layout language

The fastest way to lift a design out of the generic zone is to hand it a reference and a mood. Designers do this constantly; you can too:

  • Say the feeling out loud: "more whitespace," "calmer," "bigger type," "less boxy," "let it breathe."
  • Point at a look you love: "clean and editorial like a Kinfolk magazine page," "warm and minimal like an Aesop product page," "soft and premium like a boutique studio site."
Push it past generic

This looks a bit generic. Make it feel like [a site or brand you love — "a quiet, editorial magazine layout"]: more whitespace, a stronger type hierarchy, fewer borders and boxes, one confident accent color. Show me the restyled version.

The three-word fixes

Most design improvements are tiny requests, repeated: "more whitespace." "Bigger headline." "Calmer colors." "Fewer boxes." You're not redesigning — you're nudging, one nudge at a time, until your eye stops snagging.

You are the art director

An art director doesn't hold the pen. She looks at the work, knows what's not right, and says so clearly until it is. That's exactly your role here. The AI supplies infinite competent drafts; your taste decides which one ships. That judgment — knowing the difference between fine and right — is the part no tool can do for you, and it's the part that makes what you build look like yours.

And then — ship it

Don't let taste tip into perfectionism. Feed it your brand, make three nudges, and publish. Done and live beats perfect and local, every single time. You can always run one more loop next weekend.
