The tool space renames itself every quarter, and that churn is exactly why beginners freeze. So ignore the noise and think of it as a ladder. Each rung up gives you more power and asks for a little more patience. Start on rung one this afternoon. Climb only when a real project needs you to.
Chat + Artifacts
The fastest possible start: you describe a mini-tool inside a normal AI chat, and it builds a working version in a live preview panel beside the conversation — no account setup, no hosting, nothing to install. In Claude this preview is called an Artifact; you can build a quiz, a calculator, or an interactive page in a single conversation and share it with a link. This is where every project in Lesson 4 begins.
AI website builders
When you want a proper website at your own address — not just a shareable preview — an AI website builder chats with you, builds the site, and hosts it for you with a custom domain. Hostinger Horizons is the most beginner-friendly and cheapest on-ramp. (Alternatives worth knowing: Wix's AI builder and Framer.) Reach for this rung for the landing page and waitlist builds.
App builders
When your idea has several pages, saved data, or a login — a members area, a booking tool, a small directory that remembers entries — you want a dedicated app builder. Lovable is the friendliest for non-coders; Bolt.new and v0 (by Vercel) are strong alternatives. This is the ⚠️ "more patience" rung from Lesson 1: real capability, real back-and-forth.
Claude Code
The professional's tool, driven by conversation in a terminal window. It can build and change real, full projects — and it's genuinely more than a first-time builder needs. Know it exists so the word isn't scary. You do not need it to finish this course, and you may never need it. When a project outgrows rung three, it'll be waiting.
What it costs — the honest table
Verified July 2026. Prices and free-tier limits are the fastest-moving thing in this whole space, so treat the numbers as "about right this month" and check each tool's own pricing page before you pay. The good news: you can do rung one entirely free, which is where the course lives.
| Rung | Best first pick | Free tier? | Paid from | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Chat + Artifacts | Claude (claude.ai) | Yes — Artifacts included on Free | Pro $20/mo | A working mini-tool in one conversation |
| 2 · Website builder | Hostinger Horizons | 7-day trial | ~$6.99/mo (Explorer) | A real hosted site with your own domain |
| 3 · App builder | Lovable | Yes — 5 build credits/day | $25/mo (Pro) | Multi-page apps with logins or saved data |
| 3 · alternatives | Bolt.new · v0 (Vercel) | Yes — Bolt ~1M tokens/mo | Bolt $25/mo | Same rung, different flavor |
| 4 · Power tool | Claude Code | Uses your Claude plan | Pro $20 / Max $100–200/mo | Full projects, when you're ready |
Don't pay for a rung until a specific project makes you hit its free limit. Build free on rung one until a real site or app needs you to climb — then pay for that one tool, that one month, for that one project. No stacked subscriptions you forgot you had.
Your rung-one starter prompt
Open Claude (or your chat tool of choice), start a new conversation, and paste this to feel the loop for the first time. Fill the cerise blanks with your own idea:
Build me a simple, mobile-friendly [interactive page / quiz / calculator] as an Artifact. Here's the idea: [one sentence describing what it does and who it's for]. Start with the simplest working version — just the core thing, no extra features yet. Use a clean, warm, uncluttered look. When it's done, tell me in plain English what you built and how to share it.
Watch it appear in the preview panel. That feeling — "I described it and it exists" — is the whole course in one moment. In Lesson 3 we make your describing sharp enough to get great results every time.
By the time you read this, a tool may have renamed a plan, moved a price, or launched a rival. That's normal and it doesn't change the ladder. The rungs are stable; only the logos on them move. Pick the current best pick for your rung and go.
