Canva review: the one design tool a non-designer actually needs
Our verdict · Canva
If you’re not a designer but you need to look like one, Pro pays for itself the first week — and never gets in your way.
I design in Canva every day — printables, signage, social graphics, lead magnets for two very different brands. So here’s the short version: for anyone who isn’t a trained designer but has to produce on-brand things constantly, this is the tool. Full stop.
The template library does the heavy lifting: you start from something 80% right instead of a blank canvas. The Brand Kit keeps your fonts and colors consistent, the background remover and Magic tools save real time, and resizing one design into every social format is a two-click job. The free tier is legitimately capable; Pro is where the stock library, Brand Kit, and one-click resize live.
The honest caveat is sameness. Because millions of people start from the same templates, Canva work can look like Canva work — the fix is spending ten minutes customizing type, spacing, and color instead of shipping the default. Big files can lag, and a few AI features run on limited credits. None of that outweighs how fast it makes you.
The scorecard
What works
- +Enormous template library — you never start from blank
- +Brand Kit keeps fonts and colors consistent across everything
- +One design resizes to every social format in two clicks
- +Background remover and Magic tools genuinely save time
What doesn’t
- −Default templates can make work look “Canva-generic”
- −Large or complex files can lag in the editor
- −Some AI features are capped by monthly credits
- −No pixel- or vector-level control for advanced work
Who should not buy this
Skip Pro if you’re a working designer who needs true vector control, precise typography, or handoff-ready files — Figma or Illustrator is your seat, not this. And if you only make one graphic a year, the free plan already covers you; don’t pay for a subscription you won’t open.
